World population is over 6 billion people, the majority of whom are women in developing countries who live in poverty. Gender disparities in economic power-sharing, in education, and access to adequate health care – all contribute to the oppression of these women. The Virginia Gildersleeve International Fund (VGIF) is an AAUW Fund which is meeting the seemingly insurmountable challenges of combating poverty and achieving gender equality in developing countries. Our donors are making a difference. VGIF has contributed in excess of $1.4 million USD to support nearly 300 projects worldwide to help... one women's group at a time... alleviate these problems. We encourage individuals to contribut to this worthy cause. To learn more about VGIF, we will be highlighting some of the VGIF projects here on the blog, beginning with:
Sierra Leone Agro-business Project
Teblahun Community Agricultural Development Association implemented a 12 month agricultural project in 5 villages with 3226 women and 2524 men in order to restore food resources. The women farmers were educated in agricultural procedures including health risks and benefits related to food production, and provided with material and equipment to implement farming initiatives. Funds were used to purchase planting materials including tools, seed and fertilizers. The crops raised were cassava, rice, sweet potatoes, corn, and other vegetables. The results have been an increased availability of products in the markets, improved health of children and nursing mothers, and an increased income level of the participants. The improved economic status of women in the project communities has resulted in their improved participation in decision-making at household and community levels.
